Auburn’s Johni Broome named to preseason All-SEC first team by the league’s coaches

Auburn men’s basketball center Johni Broome has been selected to the preseason All-SEC first team by SEC coaches, according to a press release from the league on Thursday.

Broome was selected along with Arkansas’ Trevon Brazile, Florida’s Riley Kugel, Kentucky’s Anthony Reeves, Mississippi State’s Tolu Smith, Tennesse’s Santiago Vescovi as well as Zakai Zeigler and Texas A&M’s Wase Taylor IV.

Broome was also selected as a first-team All-SEC player by media members in the league’s preseason poll. The coaches did not pick an order of finish for the SEC in their poll, but Auburn was selected sixth by the media.

Between the first and second teams, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas A&M all had multiple players recognized. In total, 36 different players received votes from the coaches.

Broome injured his rotator cuff in Thursday’s 102-66 exhibition win over Auburn-Montgomery. The injury appeared minor, and Auburn believes he could play in the season opener against Baylor on Tuesday.

Broome was Auburn’s leading scorer last season in terms of points per game with just over 14. He will again be expected to lead Auburn in scoring this season.
